Are your managers more effective today than 20 years ago?
May 29, 2009
Well, probably not! ANPRO is undertaking a study – based on 20 years of its own project work, with more than 250 commercial organizations encompassing 350 assignments in more than 500 locations and several thousand managers. Results so far indicate that despite a revolution in information technology and huge advances in almost all spheres of science, there is little evidence to show that managers are today more effective as a result. Sean O’Hara CEO of ANPRO believes that managers have in many cases gone from a lack of available or timely data to drowning in data and are unable to see the wood for the trees. “Our interim findings show that whilst capital investment has led to efficiency gains through automation, managers are often struggling to fully reap the benefits this ought to bring. Although headcount may be lower and production lines and equipment more powerful, machine downtime and labour lost-time percentages have remained remarkably stable and meeting effectiveness is largely static over the period. Managers are also distracted today, being constantly available via mobile phones and the internet and bombarded with largely irrelevant e-mail and any number of data lists. This makes it increasingly hard to focus on the basics that really matter in their area of responsibility and steals time from face to face communication with their work colleagues, suppliers and customers. This inevitably has a direct impact on business performance and effectiveness”. After independent third party validation of, and commentary on its report, ANPRO aims to publish it in August 2009.
